TOKYO (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland attempts to
reach her fourth straight final at the Pan Pacific Open when she meets
seventh seed Chanda Rubin of the United States.
Sixth seed Sandrine Testud of France battles unseeded Katarina Srebotnik
of Slovenia in the other semifinal on Saturday (tonight in the U.S.).
Hingis, the defending champion, rolled into the semifinals on Friday
with a 6-0, 6-2 rout of fifth seed Anna Kournikova of Russia.
Coming off a loss to American Lindsay Davenport in the Australian Open
final, Hingis has looked impressive this week as she seeks her third title
here in four years. She won here in 1997 and 1999 and lost to Davenport
in the final two years ago.
Rubin topped fourth seed and 1999 runner-up Amanda Coetzer of South
Africa, 6-4, 6-4. She lost three of four meetings with Hingis last season,
posting her only win over the world No. 1 at Indian Wells, California.
Testud eliminated third-seeded countrywoman Nathalie Tauziat, 7-6 (7-4),
6-0, on Friday and has dropped only one set in three matches as she vies
for her first title since 1998.
Srebotnik advanced to the semifinals with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory over
American lucky loser Lilia Osterloh of the United States. Ranked No. 65
in the world, Srebotnik won her first WTA Tour event last year at Estoril,
Portugal.
First prize at this $1.08 million indoor event is $166,000.
