TOKYO (AP) -- Top-ranked Martina Hingis ousted Lisa Raymond 6-3, 7-5
today to advance to the quarterfinals in the Pan Pacific Open women's tennis.
Hingis, the defending champion, is the favorite to win the tournament,
as second-ranked Lindsay Davenport of the United States is out with an
injured left hamstring.
Raymond, ranked 27th, led 5-4 in the second set before Hingis came back
and won three straight games to close out the match.
``I started off very well and was focused. I didn't make many mistakes
and I knew the way she plays,'' said Hingis, adding that she lost a little
bit of concentration midway through the second set. ``But I'm happy I made
it through two sets.''
In the other second-round match of the day, third-seeded Nathalie Tauziat
of France beat Zimbabwe's Cara Black 6-3, 6-3.
The other two seeds who received first-round byes -- Mary Pierce of
France and South Africa's Amanda Coetzer -- were set to play their opening
matches Thursday.
In first-round action, eighth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan was eliminated
by Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 6-3. Srebotnik, ranked 65th, raced
to a 3-0 lead in the opening set as Sugiyama struggled to find her rhythm
and range.
``I think she was a little nervous because she's playing in Japan, while
I really played well without too many unforced errors,'' Srebotnik said.
Srebotnik, 18, had a tremendous breakthrough last year, winning her
first singles title, two doubles titles, a Grand Slam mixed doubles title
and playing in her first Grand Slam singles events in the French Open.
