| MELBOURNE, Australia -- World No. 1 Martina Hingis is
just one match away from her fourth consecutive Australian Open title after
trampling Spanish veteran Conchita Martinez 6-3, 6-2 in their semifinal
on Thursday.
Saturday's women's final will pit the Swiss teenager against world No.
2 Lindsay Davenport, who earlier beat comeback kid Jennifer Capriati in
straight sets.
"I think this is the dream final," Hingis said. "I will try to give
it a shot -- I've got nothing to lose."
Hingis completely outclassed 10th seed Martinez, pushing the tiring
27-year-old baseliner around the court.
So confident was Hingis that she barely even bothered to step up her
game on the big points, laughing as she sliced drop shots over the net,
and volleying winners from around the court.
Martinez was only briefly competitive in the opening set, as Hingis'
hubris saw her service broken in the seventh game.
But Hingis calmly tightened the screws and took just over an hour to
serve out the match. She also beat Martinez in the 1998 final here in Melbourne.
Hingis now has a winning streak of 27 singles matches at Melbourne Park
stretching back to 1997, and has dropped only three sets in the past three
years.
"That's a pretty good record," Hingis said after Thursday's win. "I
hope I can keep on like that."
