Tuesday, January 25 13:03:55 PT

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (TICKER) -- Martina Hingis and Yevgeny Kafelnikov try to move closer to successfully defending their Australian Open titles in quarterfinals matches Wednesday (tonight in the United States).

The top seed from Switzerland, Hingis extended her winning streak at Melbourne Park to 25 matches by defeating No. 12 Sandrine Testud of France, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), in the fourth round Monday. She plays No. 13 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, who ousted sixth seed Barbara Schett of Austria, 1-6, 6-0, 7-5, on Monday.

Hingis has not dropped a set in the tournament as she seeks her fourth straight title in Melbourne. The last woman to win four consecutive Australian Open titles was Margaret Smith, who captured seven in a row from 1960-66.

The 19-year-old Hingis is 12-1 lifetime against Sanchez-Vicario, a finalist in 1994-95 here. The Spaniard won the first meeting in 1996 but has not won since.

Kafelnikov takes on unseeded Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco in the first men's quarterfinal. The second-seeded Russian captured his second career Grand Slam here last year and has reached the quarterfinals or better the past four times HE HAS competed in Melbourne.

Kafelnikov improved to 20-3 here with his third consecutive straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 over Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus on Monday. He has not lost a set since dropping the first set to Jen Knippschild in their first-round match, and is looking to reach his fifth career Grand Slam semifinal.

El Aynaoui reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, snapping a string of seven straight exits before the third round, with his third five-set win of the tournament. El Aynaoui outlasted Arnaud Clement of France, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, but is 0-2 lifetime against Kafelnikov. This is their first meeting since 1994.

In the other men's quarterfinal, fourth seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany squares off against No. 12 Magnus Norman of Sweden and 10th seed Conchita Martinez of Spain encounters No. 16 Elena Likhovtseva of Russia on the women's side.

Kiefer dumped former top-10 player Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, Monday to reach his third career Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Norman, who also will be appearing in his second career Grand Slam round of eight, snapped Australian Lleyton Hewitt's 13-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory.

Norman has won six singles titles since the start of 1999, more than any player on the ATP Tour. Last year he was tied for the lead in tournament wins with world No. 1 Andre Agassi and No. 3 Pete Sampras. This will be his first match against Kiefer.

Martinez, the 1998 runner-up, routed unseeded American Kristina Brandi, 6-1, 6-1, while Likhovtseva stunned third-seeded Serena Williams, 6-3, 6-3. Martinez holds a 2-0 lifetime record against Likhovtseva, who is playing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
