| INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) - Top seed Martina Hingis needed just 63 minutes
to advance and former champion Monica Seles also moved on Saturday in second-round
action of the Evert Cup women's tennis tournament.
Hingis beat 18-year-old Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego 6-3, 6-4. Seles,
who returned to the tournament after a seven-year absence, was also an
easy winner over Elena Likhovtseva of Russia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
``I came out pretty rusty,'' Seles said. ``I haven't been playing that
much tennis in the last few weeks. I didn't feel too secure out there.
I was lucky to win the first set.''
Also in the second round, No. 8 Nathalie Tauziat of France, outlasted
Miho Saeki of Japan, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.
The biggest upset came when No. 9 Anna Kournikova lost to Italy's Silvia
Farina, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 7-5, in first round action.
The 17-year-old Russian star was hampered by the flu.
``I had a really difficult flu last week in Oklahoma,'' Kournikova said.
``I still didn't recover from it. I don't feel quite 100
percent physically.''
Eleventh seed Dominque Van Roost of Belgium was another first round
upset victim. losing to Barbara Rittner of Germany,
0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Twelfth seed Sandrine Testud of France cruised to the
second round by beating Maria Alejandra Vento of
Venezuela, 6-1,6-1 and Lisa Raymond upset 15-seed Natasha Zvereva of
Belarus, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, in the first round.
