NEW YORK (TICKER) -- For the second straight year, the final of the season-ending
tournament in women's tennis will feature the top two players in the world.
And for the second straight year, those players are Martina Hingis and
Lindsay Davenport.
Hingis and Davenport, the only players to hold the No. 1 ranking since
March 1997, advanced to the final of the Chase Championships on Saturday
with straight-set victories.
Hingis defeated third-ranked Venus Williams, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Davenport
survived a first-set scare to oust No. 6 Nathalie Tauziat, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.
Hingis defeated then-No. 1 Davenport in four sets in last year's final,
but the roles are reversed this year. Hingis comes in having locked up
the year-end top ranking, which Davenport held in 1998.
A 19-year-old from Switzerland, Hingis has won a tour-best seven titles
this season, and will be appearing in her 13th final of 1999 today. She
has lost her last two, falling to Williams last month in Zurich, Switzerland
and to Davenport last week in Philadelphia.
Last week's victory over Hingis gave Davenport an 8-7 lead in the head-to-head
series. She has won both meetings this year, also beating Hingis in the
final at Sydney in January.
Hingis is 1-1 in previous Chase Championship finals. She lost to Steffi
Graf in five sets in 1996.
The 23-year-old Davenport, the reigning Wimbledon champion from the
United States, is a two-time runner-up at the event, also losing to Gabriela
Sabatini in 1994. She will be seeking her seventh title of the season.
"I can't believe I am back to this point again," said Davenport, who
missed a month due to a wrist injury and struggled with a left hamstring
injury this week. "Winning last week and back to the finals again. Losing
in four sets last year was a little bit disappointing and to give myself
another chance to do it is great."
In addition, Hingis will pair up with Russian Anna Kournikova in the
doubles final as the top seeds take on No. 4 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of
Spain and Latvia's Larisa Neiland. Hingis and Kournikova won four tournaments
as a team this season, including the Australian Open. They also appeared
in the final of the French Open.
The $2 million event offers a $500,000 first prize.
