VILLANOVA, PENNSYLVANIA (TICKER) -- This is why they seed the tournament.
Martina Hingis of Switzerland, Americans Lindsay Davenport and Venus
Williams and Nathalie Tauziat of France -- the top four seeds -- all posted
victories today and advanced to the semifinals of the Advanta Championships.
Hingis outlasted determined American Amy Frazier, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and
will meet Tauziat on Saturday. Frazier was playing for a berth in next
week's 16-player Chase Championships in New York.
To make it to New York, Frazier had to get past Hingis. Instead, Spain's
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario held onto the 16th spot. Frazier has lost all three
career meetings with Hingis.
Tauziat improved to 7-0 lifetime against Lisa Raymond with a 7-6 (7-3),
6-4 victory over the unseeded American. Tauziat is seeking a third title
in her last four events.
Davenport rallied past fifth-seeded Julie Halard-Decugis of France,
4-6, 6-2, 6-1, and drew a date in the semifinals with Williams. Williams
posted a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) triumph over unseeded Frenchwoman Sandrine Testud.
Ranked third in the world, Williams collected her sixth title of the
year with a victory over Hingis at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich three
weeks ago. She also defeated Hingis in the semifinals at last month's Grand
Slam Cup in Munich before falling to younger sister Serena in the final.
The $520,000 event, which is being held on the campus of Villanova University,
offers an $80,000 first prize.
