Hingis Reaches Advanta Semifinals
Friday, November 12 9:53 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Martina Hingis ended Amy Frazier's hopes of qualifying for next week's Chase Championships with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory Friday night in the quarterfinals of the $520,000 Advanta Championships.

The No. 1-ranked Hingis will be joined in Saturday's semifinals by Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams and Nathalie Tauziat, the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 seeds, all of whom won matches earlier Friday.

The hard-hitting Frazier, vying to qualify for the year-ending championships for the second time in her career -- she lost in the first round in 1992 -- made inroads against Hingis's second serve in the first set, hitting several strong return winners and breaking Hingis three times.

But she was unable to convert a key break point that would have given her a 5-2 lead, and Hingis was able to regain a foothold in the match.

``She returned some unbelievable shots,'' Hingis said. ''There was not much I could do. I just had to mix it up and wait for my chances.''

In the first-set tiebreaker, Hingis bolted to a 5-1 advantage and closed out the set with a backhand winner. In the second, she and Frazier traded two service breaks apiece in the first four games, before Hingis broke Frazier to go ahead 5-4 and served out the match in the next game.

Frazier's loss allowed Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to clinch the 16th and final spot in the Chase field.

Davenport, ranked No. 2 in the world behind Hingis, struggled with her serve in the first set against fifth seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France before settling down and dominating the final two sets in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Her semifinal opponent will be Williams, whom she has beaten in eight of 11 career meetings.

The third-ranked Williams overpowered Frenchwoman Sandrine Testud in the first set Friday and served for the match at 5-4, in the second set before finally prevailing in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Tauziat kept alive Lisa Raymond's eight-year streak of never advancing past the quarterfinals at her home tournament with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win. Tauziat, ranked fifth in the world, has now defeated Raymond all seven times they have played, each time in straight sets.

Semifinal opponents Tauziat and Hingis have played twice before, with Hingis winning both matches.
