Hingis plays Rubin Wednesday at Advanta Championships
Wednesday, November 10 07:40:01 PT

PHILADELPHIA (TICKER) -- Top seed and world No. 1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland returns from a three-week hiatus today when she opposes American Chanda Rubin in the second round of the Advanta Championships.

The 19-year-old Hingis is 64-10 this season and has won a WTA Tour-leading seven tournaments, including the Australian Open. Three of those losses came against teenage rival Venus Williams, who beat Hingis in the final of her homeland tournament in Zurich last month.

Hingis won this event in 1997 and lost to eventual champion Steffi Graf in last year's quarterfinals. She is looking to get some matches in before defending her Chase Championships title next week in New York.

Tonight's marquee second-round match will pit second seed Lindsay Davenport and fellow American Alexandra Stevenson in a rematch of their Wimbledon semifinal won by Davenport, 6-1, 6-1.

Davenport will test her injured left wrist to see if she is fit to compete in New York. The reigning Wimbledon champion re-aggravated the injury from earlier this year at Filderstadt, Germany last month and was forced to withdraw. Davenport has captured five titles this season and compiled a 50-9 record.

In other second-round action, fifth seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France plays qualifier Maria Vento of Venezuela and Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia meets American Lisa Raymond.

Also today, Jennifer Capriati of the United States battles Belgian teen Kim Clijsters.

After going six years without a title, Capriati claimed her second this season last week at the Bell Challenge in Quebec. Ranked No. 101 in the world at the end of 1998, the 23-year-old American has displayed a renewed enthusiasm for tennis with the help of renowned coach Harold Solomon. She also has reached the fourth round at both the French and U.S. Opens.

Graf is not defending her title here after announcing her retirement in August.

The $520,000 event, which is being held on the campus of Villanova University, offers an $80,000 first prize.
