ZURICH, SWITZERLAND (TICKER) -- Minus the home court advantage and her
usual family entourage, Venus Williams added another title to her resume
by rolling over world No. 1 Martina Hingis in today's final of the $1.05
million Swisscom Challenge.
The second-seeded Williams knocked off Hingis in her homeland, 6-3,
6-4, to collect her sixth title of the year and a first prize of $150,000.
The 19-year-old American lost the first two games before making quick work
of the Swiss native.
Williams managed to beat the top seed and earn the ninth title of her
brief career despite playing without the presence of her father, Richard,
or sister, Serena.
To help atone for her 31 unforced errors, Williams collected seven aces
and 17 winners. Hingis had no aces and just two winners.
This marks the second time in three weeks that Williams has taken another
meeting in this budding rivalry. She also beat Hingis in the semifinals
of the Grand Slam Cup two weeks ago, avenging a semifinal loss to her at
the U.S. Open. Williams has won three of five matches against Hingis this
season.
Williams, the runner-up here last year, improved to 52-9 on the WTA
Tour this season. She is 39-8 on hard courts, having earned three titles
on this surface.
While Williams won her 10th final of the year, Hingis was participating
in her 11th and remained stuck on a WTA Tour-leading seven titles. She
beat Mary Pierce to win last week's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
The tour's top players will be in Moscow, Russia next week for the Ladies
Kremlin Cup, where Pierce is the defending champion.
