FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Martina Hingis, who turned 19 last week,
gave herself a belated birthday present today -- a new Porsche.
Hingis' received the sports car after winning the $250,000 Porsche Tennis
Grand Prix, easily recording a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mary Pierce in a match
that lasted just over an hour.
The Porsche is valued at $100,000. Hingis also earned the $80,000 first-place
prize.
The No. 1 player in the world and top seed in the tournament, Hingis
overpowered Pierce en route to her third title here. The event in this
Southern German town is held near Porsche's headquarters in Stuttgart.
Hingis, a native of Switzerland, earned her first career singles title
at this event in 1996 and repeated the following year, but lost in the
quarterfinals here last year.
Hingis, playing in her 10th final of the season, won for the sixth time
this year. But this title was her first since the du Maurier Open in late
August.
The champion here in 1993, the 24-year-old Pierce has reached four finals
this year but has not won since her triumph at Luxembourg last October.
Wimbledon champion and second seed Lindsay Davenport was forced to withdraw
from the tournament after reaching the quarterfinals because of a left
wrist injury.
