FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Second seed Lindsay Davenport of the United
States was forced to withdaw but sixth seed Barbara Schett of Austria moved
on at the $520,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Davenport saw her quest for a sixth title this year cut short by a left
wrist injury. Davenport's withdrawal opened the door for Germany's Anke
Huber to move into the semifinals. Huber bested Elena Likhovseva of Russia,
6-4, 6-3 in a second round matchup today and will meet the winner of Friday's
battle between Schett and fourth seed Mary Pierce of France, the winner
here in 1993.
Schett bounced Russia's Elena Dementieva in straight sets this afternoon,
6-3, 6-1. The eighth-ranked player in the world, Schett has rebounded from
a brutal opening match against Nathalie Tauziat of France.
The other semifinal matchups are top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland
against France's Nathalie Dechy and defending champion Sandrine Testud
of France against Belgium's Sabine Appelmans.
Hingis eliminated American Jennifer Capriati on Wednesday and will meet
Dechy, who ousted Belgium's Dominique Van Roost today, 6-3, 6-2. The top-ranked
player in the world, Hingis won her first career singles title here three
years ago and repeated in 1997. She lost to Van Roost in the quarterfinals
here last year.
Testud posted the tournament's biggest upset Wednesday when she dropped
the first set but rebounded to knock off Serena Williams. Testud moved
on to face Appelmans, who survived a battle today with American Amy Frazier,
6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
First prize is $80,000.
