FILDERSTADT, Germany (AP) - Martina Hingis, the world's top-ranked player,
beat Jennifer Capriati 6-4, 6-0 today at the Porsche Grand Prix, the event
where she won her first tour title in 1996.
Hingis struggled in the first set, but needed only 15 minutes to win
the second and reach the quarterfinals at the $520,000 tournament.
She led 5-3 in the first set, dropped her serve with two double faults
and recovered by breaking back. Capriati, ranked 30th in the world, squandered
several chances to win the set.
``The first set was nerve-wracking, but then I played well,'' Hingis
said.
France's Mary Pierce, seeded fourth, needed 2:25 to defeat Natasha Zvereva
of Belarus 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-4. Nathalie Dechy, also of France, beat Mary
Joe Fernandez 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
``I made a lot of easy errors, so I'm happy to win,'' Pierce, the 1993
champion, said.
