NEW YORK (Reuters) - Top-seeded world number one Martina Hingis of Switzerland
claimed the first berth in the women's semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis
championships Tuesday with a straight-set win over Germany's Anke Huber.
Hingis lost the first two games before sweeping the last 12 for a 6-2
6-0 victory over the unseeded Huber, a former top-10 player.
The 18-year-old Hingis, who has reached the semifinals in 12 of the
last 13 Grand Slams she has contested, will face the winner of Tuesday
night's quarter-final between third seed Venus Williams and 12th-seeded
Austrian Barbara Schett.
