TORONTO (TICKER) -- If anyone had a chance at ending Monica Seles' four-year
reign as du Maurier Open champion, it was world No. 1 Martina Hingis.
Hingis, the top seed, captured her WTA Tour-leading sixth title of the
year today with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Seles in the $1.05 million tournament.
After back-to-back losses at the French Open and Wimbledon, Hingis has
won two of her last three tournaments as she prepares for the U.S. Open,
which begins in eight days. The Swiss teenager collected $150,000 for winning
her 25th career singles title and improved to 51-8 in 1999.
For Seles, her 24-match winning streak at this event came to an end.
The American put together an impressive run in her first tournament back
from a left forearm injury, which sidelined her for a month.
A former No. 1 player, Seles fell to 29-10 this season and came up short
in her attempt to win her second title of the year and 45th of her career.
The final was a rematch of last year's semifinal, in which Seles won
in three sets. In their most recent meeting before today, Hingis won, 6-2,
6-4, in this year's Australian Open semifinals.
