LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Top seed and defending champion Lindsay Davenport
of the United States aims to reach her fourth straight semifinals tonight
when she takes on Conchita Martinez of Spain at the $520,000 Acura Classic
tennis event.
Davenport, who adanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 rout of
Germany's Anke Huber on Friday, is only 2-7 lifetime against Martinez,
the 1995 winner. She is 19-2 in her last 21 matches in California, with
both defeats coming at the hands of sisters Venus and Serena Williams.
Venus' victory came last week in their semifinal match at the TIG Tennis
Classic in San Diego.
In two quarterfinals earlier today, second seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland
fought off seventh-seeded Barbara Schett of Austria and No. 3 Mary Pierce
of France was unceremoniously bounced by countrywoman Julie Halard-Decugis.
The Wimbledon champion, Davenport has won 36 of 43 matches in 1999 and
has dropped only four of 25 hardcourt matches this season. She will defend
her U.S. Open singles title later this month.
Hingis has six wins in as many meetings with Schett, but today's victory
may have been her toughest. She dropped a first-set tiebreaker but rallied
for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3 victory, taking control with a service break
in the first game of the final set.
Hingis reached the quarterfinals on Thursday with a three-set victory
over Lisa Raymond of the United States. A loser to Davenport at this event
the last two years, Hingis is 48-7 with five titles in 1999. She improved
to 25-4 on hardcourts.
Sixth-seeded American teenager Serena Williams became the first player
to secure a semifinal berth Thursday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over fourth seed
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain. She will play Hingis on Saturday.
Pierce was a 7-5, 6-2 loser to Halard-Decugis, who awaits the winner
of the Davenport-Martinez match. She remained winless in 1999 and has not
reached a semifinal since the Italian Open, a claycourt event.
First prize is $80,000.
