SAN DIEGO (TICKER) -- It seems Switzerland's Martina Hingis has erased
memories of her back-to-back embarrassing displays at the French Open and
Wimbledon.
Hingis, the second seed and 1997 champion, dumped Belgium's Dominique
Van Roost, 6-2, 6-4, today to become the first to secure a semifinal berth
at the $520,000 TIG Tennis Classic.
German qualifier Anke Huber advanced to the quarterfinals today by rallying
for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Austria's Barbara Schett.
Tonight, France's Sandrine Testud upset sixth seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
of Spain, 6-2, 7-5, in a second-round match.
The three remaining quarterfinals take place Friday. Huber meets top
seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States, American Venus Williams, the
fourth seed, takes on Testud, and No. 7 Amanda Coetzer of South Africa
battles American Amy Frazier.
Davenport is 17-1 in her last 18 matches in her native California. The
streak dates to last season, when she swept all three summer hardcourt
tournaments in California. The only loss for the 23-year-old Newport Beach
resident in that span was to fellow American Serena Williams in March at
Indian Wells.
Davenport successfully defended her title at the Bank of the West Classic
on Sunday in Stanford, defeating Serena's older sister, Venus, 7-6 (7-1),
6-2. The reigning Wimbledon champion is 34-5 this season, including 19-3
on hard courts, and will try to win her second straight U.S. Open later
this summer.
Venus Williams is 37-7 in 1999 and has won 15 of her last 16 matches
on hardcourts. Her loss to Davenport was only her fourth in 24 matches
on hard surfaces this season.
First prize is $80,000.
