| LONDON (TICKER) -- Top seed Pete Sampras of the United States looks to
have smooth sailing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals while women's No. 1
seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland might have a tougher time as the draws
for the third Grand Slam of the season were announced today.
Sampras, the defending champion seeking his sixth title here, will play
Australian Scott Draper in the first round at the All-England Club, then
would face either Wayne Black of Zimbabwe or Canadian Sebastien Lareau
in the second round.
Hingis, the 1997 winner, will take on a qualifier in the first round
but then could face American Mary Joe Fernandez or Irina Spirlea of Romania
before a possible encounter with ninth seed Mary Pierce of France in the
fourth round.
In the third round, Sampras could possibly encounter French Open finalist
Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine, who knocked off the American in the second
round at Paris. The first seed Sampras could meet would be claycourt specialist,
16th seed Felix Mantilla of Spain in the fourth round.
Seventh seed Mark Philippoussis of Australia, who will open against
Belgian teenager Xavier Malisse, lost to Sampras in last year's quarterfinals
and the pair could square off in that round again if seedings hold.
Two-time finalist and No. 7 Aranxta Sanchez Vicario of Spain is the
highest seed in Hingis' quarter, which also features 11th seed Julie Halard
Decugis of France, the winner of last week's event in Birmingham, England
and 1994 champion Conchita Martinez of Spain.
Other seeds in Sampras' half are third seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia;
sixth seed Tim Henman and ninth seed Greg Rusedski - both Englishman with
excellent grasscourt skills; No. 12 Carlos Moya of Spain; and No. 13 Karol
Kucera of Slovakia.
Kafelnikov, a loser in the first round here two of the last three years,
faces a tough challenge in hard-serving Magnus Larsson of Sweden.
Henman, who lost to Sampras in the semifinals here last year and in
the final of the Stella Artois Championships on Sunday, will play Frenchman
Arnaud Di Pasquale in the first round.
In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Patrick Rafter of Australia,
the two-time U.S. Open champion, will face a qualifier and might have to
battle his doubles partner, Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, in the second round.
Things do not get any easier after that for Rafter, who could face Australian
Open finalist Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and prodigy Lleyton Hewitt of Australia
on his way towards a possible meeting with No. 15 Nicolas Kiefer of Germany
in the fourth round.
But Kiefer, who won his first grasscourt tournament last week at Halle,
Germany, may have to get past countryman Boris Becker in the second round.
Becker, a three-time champion, will be making his final appearances at
the All-England Club, where he won the first of six Grand Slam titles when
he was just 17 years old. He meets British wild card Miles Maclagan in
the opening round.
French Open champion and fourth seed Andre Agassi of the United States,
looking to become the first man to win at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in
the same season since Bjorn Borg in 1980, starts off against speedy Romanian
Andrei Pavel. The other seed in his section of the draw is No. 14 Tommy
Haas of Germany.
Fifth seed and 1996 winner Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands will
play Norway's Christian Ruud while three-time runner-up Goran Ivanisevic
of Croatia, the 10th seed, begins his campaign for his first Grand Slam
title against a qualifier.
Defending women's champion and fifth seed Jana Novotna of the Czech
Republic, nursing a sprained ankle, will start against Taiwan's Shi-Ting
Wang. She could face her doubles partner No. 16 Natasha Zvereva, a semifinalist
last season, in the round of 16, and third seed Lindsay Davenport of the
United States in the quarterfinals.
In the bottom half of the draw, French Open champion and second seed
Steffi Graf of Germany will begin her quest for an eighth Wimbledon title
against Slovakia's Ludmila Cervanova. No. 12 Amanda Coetzer of South Africa
could be a potential fourth-round opponent.
Sisters Venus and Serena Williams of the United States could square
off in the fourth round. Venus Williams, the sixth seed, will play Miriam
Oremans of the Netherlands in the first round while younger sister Serena
will meet Barbara Schwartz of Austria. Schwartz ousted Venus Williams in
the fourth round of the French Open.
