TOKYO (AP) - One day after regaining the No. 1 ranking, Martina Hingis
beat Amanda Coetzer 6-2, 6-1 Sunday to win the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
It was the second time the Swiss teen-ager won the tournament, the previous
victory coming in 1997.
``I'm happy to be No. 1 again, and I'm happy to win here again,'' Hingis
said. ``I just want to be the best.''
Hingis started with a love game, on a forehand winner, two good serves
that Coetzer hit into the net and an error.
Hingis had only two aces with her big serve, but kept pounding winners
into the corners, displaying impressive ground strokes,
volleys and passing shots.
Coetzer broke once with two forehand winners, a double fault and an
error in the first set's fifth game.
The match lasted only 44 minutes on the carpeted court of the Metropolitan
Gymnasium.
``The court suits me good because on a surface like here she (Coetzer)
gives me enough time to play my game,'' Hingis said.
``But it's faster, so I can make my points quicker.''
``I would've loved to be able to play with some longer rallies,'' Coetzer
said. ``I think that probably would give me a little better
feel on the ball. But she (Hingis) just hits a good shot after the
first shot.''
Hingis has won 14 of her 15 matches this year, including her third straight
Australian Open title last week.
Hingis supplanted Lindsay Davenport at the top of the rankings after
beating doubles partner and Jana Novotna 6-3, 6-4 in Saturday's semifinals.
Hingis had been second to Davenport since Oct. 12.
Hingis previously had been No. 1 starting March 31, 1997, replacing
Steffi Graf.
The WTA releases the weekly rankings Monday, and Coetzer will advance
to No. 13 from No. 15. The South African reached the final by beating Davenport,
the defending champion and top seed, and Monica Seles, the fourth seed.
Hingis won $150,000 and Coetzer $75,000.
In the doubles final, Davenport and Natasha Zvereva beat Hingis and
Novotna 6-2, 6-3.
