PARIS (Reuters) - Austrians Barbara Schwartz and Sylvia Plischke's French
Open fairy-tale runs were abruptly ended Tuesday as Martina Hingis and
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario dumped them out to set up a semifinal clash of
their own.
World number one Hingis ended qualifier Schwartz's tournament with a
6-2, 6-2 win on the Suzanne Lenglen court in just 60 minutes while over
on center court defending champion Sanchez-Vicario took 90 minutes to advance
6-2 6-4.
World number 125 Schwartz, who scored a major upset Sunday by beating
fifth seed Venus Williams in three sets, was not allowed to reproduce that
form by the Swiss top seed.
Schwartz came out all guns blazing and broke Hingis in the first game
before moving 2-0 up in just five minutes.
But once Hingis, traditionally a slow starter, did get on the scoreboard
in the next game there was no stopping her and she won the next seven on
the trot to lead 6-2 1-0. Schwartz refused to change her game plan, though,
and went for winners on every point.
She stemmed the run of games by holding serve for 1-1 and then broke
Hingis to lead the second set. But while the Austrian's out-and-out attacking
game plan had worked against Williams the more solid Hingis was able to
frustrate her, prompting her to make 31 unforced errors in just 16 games.
Hingis again tightened up her play and won the final five games for a 6-2,
6-2 victory in just 60 minutes.
Plischke went into her match with Sanchez-Vicario full of confidence
having compiled a 4-1 record against top 20 players in May including wins
over world number four Jana Novotna in the round of 16 at Roland Garros
and Sanchez-Vicario in the Italian Open.
While Plischke had been able to overpower Sanchez-Vicario in Rome, the
Spaniard proved more determined and consistent on Paris.
Serving for the match at 6-2 5-4 nerves did begin to creep in and the
three-times champion blew two match points, pushing forehands long, before
finally clinching victory when Plischke dumped a forehand into the net.
Second seed Lindsay Davenport faces Steffi Graf, the number six, and
third seed Monica Seles plays unseeded Conchita Martinez later Tuesday
to complete the women's quarter-finals.
